NASA Astronaut Jonny Kim Completes Nearly a Decade of Service, Returns to U.S. Navy Duty

Born in Los Angeles on February 5, 1984, to Korean-American immigrant parents, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy shortly after high school in 2002. He trained as a hospital corpsman, completed Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training, and joined SEAL Team Three. During his military service, he participated in more than 100 combat operations, primarily in Iraq, where he served in medical and operational roles. Selected as a NASA astronaut in 2017 as part of Astronaut Group 22, Kim completed two years of rigorous astronaut candidate training covering space station systems, Russian language, robotics, T-38 jet operations, geology, survival skills, and spacewalk preparation. He supported station operations as a capsule communicator (CapCom) in Mission Control at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, contributed to Artemis program development, led the astronaut crew operations branch, and served as increment lead for Expedition 65.
Historic Spaceflight Mission
Kim launched to the International Space Station on April 8, 2025, aboard the Roscosmos Soyuz MS-27 spacecraft alongside cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov and Alexey Zubritsky. As a flight engineer for Expeditions 72 and 73, he spent 245 days in orbit—completing 3,920 revolutions of Earth and traveling nearly 104 million miles. He conducted research across technology development, Earth science, biology, and human health studies supporting future space exploration.
Notable contributions included serving as U.S. Operating Segment lead for the second half of Expedition 73, overseeing operations across the station’s international modules. During his time aboard, the station achieved a historic milestone: every available docking port was occupied simultaneously for the first time in 25 years. Kim also operated the Canadarm2 robotic arm to capture Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus XL spacecraft on its first flight, securing approximately 11,000 pounds of supplies. The crew returned safely to Earth with a parachute-assisted landing in Kazakhstan on December 9, 2025.
